Final Round Blogs: The Spot vs Rob(Marvel vs The Amazing World Of Gumball

"Nemeses aren't born, they are made."

-Roxane Gay

At some point in everyones life, we can feel down. Like a loser, like a forgotten person, like we don't matter. And sometimes, we can pin this feeling on someone else.

The Spot, Spider-Man's greatest foe.

Rob, Gumball Wattersons arch-nemesis.

Both of these enemies have faced their eternal enemies before, but now they'll face each other for The Final Round.

Before we start

These characters are both fairly simple, but we're still gonna set some rules and regulations for their arsenals and continuities.

For Spot we'll focus exclusively on the version from the movies, so no comic Spot. The matchup focuses exclusively on the Spiderverse movies in terms of thematics and this version is far more iconic. We'll use his powers that he got towards the end of the movie and try to avoid making assumptions as much as possible. We'll also focus on alternative Spider-men when necessary.

As for Rob, we'll be using all the shows and comics. We'll also give him the Universal Remote. While it's arguably not standard, it makes the matchup more debatable and is a hugely iconic part of his story, character arc, and the show itself. We won't give him Banana Barbara's paintings as you need Barbara herself for it. We'll give him the bomb from The Bus for the shits and giggles.

As always let's put out a mandatory spoiler warning, so proceed with caution.

Background

“What’s up danger?”

Miles Morales was just your average, everyday teen living his life, going to school.
But what he didn't know was that the worst and most menacing crime boss in the city, Kingpin, was up to no good. While everybody’s favourite Spider-man tried to stop him, he was killed in action by Kingpin himself and the Hadron Collider he was trying to stop. So, Miles and Peter B Parker teamed up with other Spider-men to stop it. Along the way, Miles fought Doctor Octopus, stole and threw a bagel at a scientist, destroyed the Collider and saved the multiverse.

Little did he know, destroying the Collider had some surprising side-effects. From this was bOrn-

The Spot

"This is going to be good for us Spider-Man. You and me are going to live up to our potential. You'll finally have a villain worth fighting for and I won't be JUST A JOKE TO YOU!"

The Spot started his spree with petty crimes, using his newfound powers on simple ATM machines. After being stopped by his 'nemesis' Miles, he kicked himself so badly he encountered an epiphany. He mastered his portals and gained the powers he needed to finally, FINALLY wreck havoc upon Spider-man's life. So make sure you never call the Spot a loser or a nobody, because he'll come across the Spider-Verse for his revenge.

“What the what?”

In the cheery town of Elmore, a not-so-normal family lives in their not-so-normal town. These are the Wattersons, Gumball Watterson as the eldest son of the family. The town was full of wacky citizens, like Penny the Peanut, Banana Joe the Banana, and, uhh, Ralph? Was that his name? But something strange, even relatively speaking, brewed beneath the surface.

The Void.

All of the mistakes of the universe hid here. Helicopter ejector seats, 80s hair spray, the keytar, that one background character. Roy? Rich? Anyway, Gumball and friends bravely ventured through to find their forgotten friend Molly. But as they escaped something came baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAA-

Rob

“MY NAME IS ROB, GOSH DARN IT!”

A nobody and forgotten, Rob was left with no purpose. He turned to the centrepieces of the world, Gumball and Darwin, and searched for a purpose. But nothing was left. Nothing but the villain. He grew to hate Gumball, to to get revenge for being forgotten, trauma from the Void, and above all else, to free himself from the purpose of fiction. So remember him, because in the whole world, there's nobody who hates living in the Amazing World of Gumball more.

Abilities/Arsenal

Spot

Portals

His most iconic power and namesake, the Spot is covered in hundreds of portals casually leading to alternate realities. He can use this to reflect attacks

Flight

When escaping Miles, he flew. Simple enough.

Limited precognition

Showed Miles a vision of what was to come, although whether this was intentional or not or if he can replicate it is unknown.

Telekinesis

The vision he showed to Miles involved pulling several buildings towards him. In the same scene he snipped Miles webbing by making a snip motion.

Rob

The Universal Remote

The Universal Remote is a mysterious item from the Awesome Store that can warp reality in numerous ways. For example:

Light manipulation: Reduced the brightness of the store until Gumball couldn't see(0:20). It likely affects a single target based on the lack of reaction from everyone else.

Dramatic manipulation? I don't even know: Changed the lighting and borders of the show to create a fitting tone(1:35)

Portal creation: Created a portal to the Void(2:05)

Death manipulation: Gumball used the Remote to instantly kill Rob(2:55). Arguably it just stops movement because Rob heard Gumball get his name wrong under its effect. However, he was implied to be able to kill Gumball with the same button(9:50)

Telekinesis: Pushed Gumball away(3:24)

Sight manipulation: Made everything blurry(6:50)

Sound manipulation: Muted everything(7:20)

Dimensional travel: Switched to the news channel(9:08)

The Bomb

It's a bomb that can make a huge explosion what more do you want

The Spot

Feats

  • Helped create the Hadron Collider and created a miniature one later
  • Defeated 4 Spider-men at once casually
  • Became Spider-man’s greatest foe
  • Beat WD Gaster in rap

Scaling

The Spot

Earth-1610

Considering Spot can take on Miles without any difficulty now, he should also upscale the other members of his home universe like Kingpin and the original Spider-man.

Spider-men

Similarly to earlier, Spot can take on multiple Spider-men at once. The chase scene establishes them as generally comparable, so Spot should upscale all Spider-men in the society.

MCU Spider-man, Amazing Spider-man and Sam Raimi Spider-man(Debatable)

Whilst they don’t appear directly in the movie, they are a canon part of the Spiderverse. It’s entirely possible SRSM and ASM were somewhere in the crowd, and even then Spider-men are generally on par. More information will be Before the Verdicts, and the MCU scaling will as well.

Rob

The Wattersons

Rob has fought on par with Gumball multiple times, who can all fight on par with each other.

Citizens of Elmore

Nicole is consistently one of the stronger people in Elmore, and everyone dealt comparable damage to the Console in their team attack, so Rob should scale to everyone within reason.

Before the Verdicts

Insomniac scaling?

So Insomniac Spider-man makes a brief cameo in the Society, so you might question why this isn't part of our chain-scaling. Problem is, this can't be the Insomniac version for continuity reasons. Tineline issues aside, this version of Spidey is canon to the multiverse of the Marvel comics, so this one is completely different one way or another.

Live-action scaling

Scaling to other Spider-men should be valid. The society implies all Spider-men are roughly on par, and Spot drastically upscales the average Spidey. So what about MCU chain-scaling?

So through the different movies, there are a few notable characters and feats we need to establish Spot can scale to. These are:

  • Thor(Shaking Jotunheim)
  • The Celestials(Moving and creating stars and galaxies)
  • Captain Marvel(flight speed)
  • Infinity Ultron(fighting the Watcher and eating galaxies)
There's tons of other feats we could go over, but this is a Spiderverse blog, not an MCU blog. If you want calcs, Vs Battle Wiki is pretty comprehensive. But for now...

Thor scaling

Spidey has staggered Thanos and tanked a throw from him. There's no reason for Thanos to hold back here, and it doesn't end here. He briefly fought Captain America, and while Tony said Cap could’ve won easily if he wanted, his fight with Bucky and Sam makes it consistentSpidey can also stop Cull Obsidians attack and help fight him.

As for how these characters scale to Thor, they all have their reasoning. Thanos and Sam have Hulk scaling. Sam might seem dodge but he survived being at the epicentre of an attack harming Red Hulk, so it should be valid. Cull Obsidian can hurt Iron Man and Captain America can fight Thanos alongside Thor and Tony. Considering Hulks 2 fights against Thor he should definitely scale.

So Thor scaling is surprisingly consistent, with Spider-man consistently keeping up with characters around his level.

Celestial scaling

Whilst this might seem impossible, Omnipotent City is home to the universes strongest gods and includes Celestials, so Thor one-shotting Zeus should scale to them.

Infinity Ultron scaling

This one is easily the trickiest, because there's evidence both for and against this scaling.

In terms of for this scaling
In terms of feats against

Multiversal Collider scaling?

Yeah, it's probably not valid. It's not the Collider itself that collapses the multiverse, its the incursions it causes, so Spot shouldn't scale to it.

Universal Rob feats?

Console scaling

So in The ConsoleThe Console warps the entire universe into a videogame and the Watterson kids barely survive a blow from it and Elmore citizens can beat it, so scaling to it should be valid. Some people argue this is just reality warping but... there's no evidence for that? This feat should be a valid universal feat.

Big Bang feat

On the topic of valid universal feats...

Just kidding. They were nowhere near the Big Bang so they wouldn't scale.

Richard getting a job

As funny as this feat is, it only happened by defying the natural order of the universe, so neither Richard nor Rob would scale.

Gumball stops time?

So in this feat, after almost being late Gumball runs into the screen and stops time. This feat is weird, because its kinda vague how this did happen. So let's break it down.

Gumball runs directly at the screen at cracks it, pausing time. The screen isn't a major component as the cracks disappear and aren't noticed by any characters, making the last possibility Gumballs speed. Even if you don't like this, Darwin moves around just fine in the timestop as an inaccessible speed feat of itself. So yeah, this feat is fairly valid.

Verdict

Stats

So these 2 are fairly grounded, shouldn't be too- WHAT THE FUCK

The Spot can scale to roughly 17.4 QuettaFOE from Celestial scaling and around 26 trillion times the speed of light. No biggie. Rob on the other hand is confidently universal with immeasurable speed.

Higher ends from Infinity Ultron can change this, jumping Spot up to 5D, but either way Rob is infinitely faster.

Spot has a chance of redirecting blows from Rob but ultimately Rob is gonna land a hit. If you buy the shaky Infinity Ultron scaling he's at least more durable, but more likely than not Rob is capable of ending this fight in one hit.

Arsenal/Abilities

The Spot obviously has BFR as his best option here. It might seem like Rob could escape this with change channel but it seemingly just goes to a different form of the same dimension, as the news broadcast he went to was talking about Elmore. Rob still has an escape option through rewinding time, however.

On the topic of Rob, the Remote gives him several good hax for this battle, notably:

  • Death manipulation(can kill Spot, duh)
  • Time stop(allows him to do whatever he wants and not worry about portals changing)
  • Age manipulation(can revert Spot to his weaker form or even before he had powers)
  • Time loop(can undo all of Spots actions)
Spots best option is to destroy or steal the Remote, but Rob's superior speed nullifies this. If he's lucky, he can redirect Rob's hax back at him, but this is pretty luck-based.

Overall

The Spot

"Because of you I lost my job, my face, my family wouldn't even look at me. I made you into a hero, you made me into THIS. LOOK AT ME! YOU DID THIS TO ME! LOOK AT ME, I'll MAKE YOU RESPECT ME!"

Advantages

  • Stronger with Infinity Ultron scaling
  • Can redirect Rob's attacks and hax
  • Can steal the Remote
  • Coming back
  • Is slamming Polka-Dot Man and Angstrom
  • Can say the N-word now

Disadvantages

  • Slower no matter how you dice it
  • Most likely weaker
  • Vulnerable to most of the Remote's hax
  • Bagel

Rob

"You really don't get it do you? So happy to star in your amazing world, can't you see that none of this is real?"

Advantages

  • Infinitely faster
  • Most likely stronger
  • Has several one-shot options
  • Far more hax
  • Is coming back
  • Has a degree in Canadian history

Disadvantages

  • Hax could be redirected
  • Arguably weaker
  • Was British that one time
  • Rose
  • Really made Gumball watch his brother turn into a fish and suffocate chill out bro

I can Spot a winner pretty easy, and it's Amazing. The winner of The Final Round is Rob.

Next time

Once more I am leaving the voting process to you guys. You know what to do.
